What to See in Garrucha: Food, Fun, and Something for Everyone

When it comes to visiting charming coastal destinations, at Servigroup Hotels we know exactly where to go. Just five minutes from our four-star hotels in Mojácar lies Garrucha, a delightful fishing village on the Almería coast, best known for its exquisite cuisine featuring the famous red prawn.

But this destination offers far more than just delicious seafood. Garrucha is a place to enjoy with all five senses. Here’s our guide on what to see and do while you're there.

Fishing boat port of Garrucha

1.The Seafront Promenade

Garrucha’s promenade is perfect for a peaceful stroll by the sea, especially as fishing boats return to port and the sun sets, creating a picture-perfect Mediterranean scene.

If you're in town on a Friday morning, don’t miss the weekly market held just by the promenade from 9am to 2pm. It’s bursting with colourful stalls offering everything from fresh fruit—perfect for a beach picnic—to stylish summer outfits ideal for showing off your tan.

2. The Fish Market and Local Stalls

Garrucha owes everything to the sea, a sentiment reflected in its town crest, which reads Ex Mari Orta—“Born of the Sea.” And that’s exactly what this village is.

One of its most authentic gems is the fish auction, where the freshest seafood straight from the Mediterranean is brought in daily. These are the flavours you’ll enjoy in the buffets at Hotel Servigroup Marina Playa and Marina Mar.

If you're not staying at the hotel but still fancy tasting the local cuisine, head to Chiringuito Cala Marina for the best espetos (grilled sardines) and traditional dishes from Almeria.

A fantastic time to visit is in October, during the Garrucha Red Prawn Festival. This year’s celebration runs from 25th to 27th, a perfect excuse to book a stay at Hotel Marina Playa and indulge in the region’s finest seafood.

3. San Ramón Castle

One of Garrucha’s historical highlights is the Castle of Jesús Nazareno, also known as San Ramón Castle. Built in 1769 to protect the town from pirate attacks, it stands as a reminder of the 19th-century golden era, when the local port thrived thanks to mining and red prawn fishing.

Once used as a Guardia Civil outpost, today the castle serves as NAUTARUM, an interpretation centre dedicated to local fishing heritage. It also hosts weddings and cultural events.

4. Day Trips and Nearby Attractions

If you're after more than just sun and seafood, Garrucha is the ideal base for exploring the area.

Mojácar, perched high on the Sierra de Cabrera, has been named one of Spain’s 15 most beautiful villages. Its whitewashed houses and breathtaking views of sea and mountains make it a must-visit.

Alternatively, explore the Cabo de Gata Natural Park, a natural paradise with unspoilt beaches, perfect for swimming, hiking or cycling.

And if you're a motorsport fan, the Almería Race Circuit is just 50 km away.
