Cycling in Benidorm

The capital of the Costa Blanca is ideal for hosting professional and amateur cycling groups. On several occasions the town has been the epicenter of sports competitions. In 2011 Benidorm hosted the timing section of the Tour of Spain (Vuelta Ciclista España).

The main reason is the variety of the land in the area, ranging from quiet valleys and plains to steep mountain roads such as Sierra Bernia, Aitana or Puig Campana.

Thereby allowing the practice of various forms of mountain biking and of course road cycling.

So for you to enjoy the best that Benidorm and its surroundings have to offer, we propose several routes for you to enjoy your favorite sport on vacation!

 

Routes:

1. Circular Route around the Puig Campana Mountain

The Puig Campana, is a natural protected area, it is one of the most dominating mountains of the Costa Blanca, offering the most spectacular views of the whole of Benidorm, surrounding areas and its fantastic coastline.

Located in Finestrat, it is 1410 meters high, being the highest costal mountain in Spain and a reference point on the Levante coast, ideal for cycling and discovering its natural countryside.

The route is short but intense. It does have some very steep sections, clean, stony, rocky sections and some paved sections. You can check here for the complete Puig Campana route.

 

2. Sierra Helada - Albir Lighthouse

A Natural Park near the sea "Sierra Helada" is the coastal mountain range that rises above the towns of Benidorm, Alfaz Del Pi and Altea.

Its great natural value makes it the first Marine Land Park of Valencia.

A mountain range made for cycling and contemplating the wonders of nature. The area is full of circuits with slides, some very fast and with many curves and super elevations.

It is highly recommended for beginners on the mountain bike route.

3. Altea - Sierra Bernia - Altea

Sierra Bernia, with 1900 hectares and perpendicular to the coast, stretches over 11 km divided between the towns of Altea, Benissa, Jalon, Calpe and Callosa d'En Sarria.

Within the mountain range are the ruins of a fort, which in 1562 Philip II ordered the construction to prevent revolts of the Moors and defend the coast from attacks by Barbary pirates. Currently, you can see the remains of walls and the moat...

4. La Nucía – Ponoig

The Monte Ponoig is one of the peaks of the Sierra de Aitana. With a height of 1181 meters, it is located west of the towns of Polop and La Nucia and along with the Puig Campana are the closest mountains to the sea.

It is characterized by rocky, steep slopes, cliffs and walls. The vegetation is predominantly pines and oak. A forest full of trails for mountain biking, here you will discover the best scenery and villages inside the Marina Baixa, with some of the most spectacular views of the area.
