Benidorm’s eagerly-awaited Patron Saint Festivities 2018 are almost here

It is said that 277 years ago the surprising discovery of a statue of a virgin took place, this came out completely intact from a devastating fire. A miracle that every year a tribute is payed to this ancient celebration, which its origins also celebrated the great return of the Benidorm fishermen to their families after a long season of work at sea.

Today, however, it brings together all the people of Benidorm who, for 6 days, celebrate their Patron Saint's Day. But it also includes those tourists who are on holiday in Benidorm, or are enjoying a weekend getaway.

Fire crackers, costumes and parades

Firecrackers at Benidorm’s Festivities

It will be the next Friday 9th November when everything starts. At the same time, the capital of the Costa Blanca turns into a coming and going of parades and activities, with the music of the bands as a backdrop, and a smell of gunpowder without which the Fiestas de Benidorm 2018 would be inconceivable. All this festive atmosphere you can begin to enjoy on the same Friday of fiestas throughout the day, but it will not be until the afternoon when the artistic lighting in the popular Street Martínez Alejos of Benidorm makes it official. There will be the new queens of the fiestas (major and children) who will be in charge of this event, which together with their Courts of Honor will help you spend an emotional and very pleasant time.

New Fairground Attractiones

Funfair at Benidorm's Festivities

Like every year on the Friday of fiestas, with the arrival of the evening, the official inauguration of the new mechanical fun fair will take place, which will be erected in Benidorm. In addition, in honor of the popular Children's Day, there will be very low prices for you and yours to enjoy all the fun of the fair.

Attractions such as a ghost train, classic merry-go-rounds, exhilarating bumper cars and a nail-biting big wheel, only for the brave, will ensure a fun-packed evening during the festivities, whether you go with children or not. And by the way, we recommend that you don’t leave the fair without having tried a delicious stuffed potato, very popular amongst Benidorm locals who flock here during the celebrations.

The popular Entrance of Peñas (clubs) in Benidorm Fiestas

Entrance of Peñas in Benidorm

It is said that the Fiestas do not really begin until the dynamic and fun Entrance of Peñas. It is a spectacular march in which all the supporting clubs belonging to the Official Association of fiestas participate.

The participants get the new Patron Saint Festivities underway with a contagious dose of joy and elation and a starting gun, to signal the beginning of this great local celebration.

The event is highly symbolic and enjoyable, both for those participating and for those attending, whilst at the same time being highly representative of all Benidorm’s fiestas. We highly recommend that you watch the start of the festivities as a warm-up so that you can then continue enjoying the great atmosphere of the “peñas” (clubs) in Benidorm.

Once the welcome parade is over, the peñas are then at your disposal. Therefore, it can be said that the fiestas have really begun for everyone.

As you may know, the clubs consist of groups of friends who meet regularly to prepare the festivities of Benidorm in November, with the correct organization for the autumn. Many of the events are celebrated at different times of the year: the popular weekend camp where the clubs meet and camp in an area prepared for the occasion; the day of the mona, after Holy Week; Offerings to the Virgin del Sufragio several times a year; the famous day of the peñas, usually in October, etc. All these acts are aimed at maintaining the spirit of unity among the people of Benidorm, and also to enjoy a few more days as if they were already in Benidorms patron festivities.

Now on the eve of the of November, the clubs are installed in the most central locations, always around the old town, in order to offer five days of extraordinary atmosphere of music, activities and fun.

Dramatisation of the Discovery of the Virgin of the Suffrage

Enactment of the Discovery of the Virgin of the Suffrage during Benidorm's Festivities

Considered a celebration of great tourist interest in the Valencian Community, this reenactment will allow you to travel back in time to the year 1740, where you can witness the legendary event in which three sailors from Benidorm sailed to a ship that was drifting, here they found a statue of the Virgin of the Suffrage, who had survived a catastrophic fire. From that moment, she became the official patron saint of the fishing village that was Benidorm in the mid-eighteenth century.

This emotional performance, which will take place on the Poniente beach of Benidorm, on Friday 9th november, this will culminate with the firing salute of honor, by the Valencian Fireworks company.

It is a Solemn Pilgrimage that will highlight the penyas of the fiesta association, and will depart from the Elche Park, to continue along the Paseo de la Carretera, the popular Alameda del Alcalde Don Pedro Zaragoza Orts and the Mayor Street, to culminate in the square of San Jaime, where the flowers will be delivered to the Virgin Sufragio.

This is also an act of great expectation at the Fiestas of Benidorm, which starts at 18:00 pm on Saturday, although we recommend that you go early to enjoy it more closely.

Benidorm Fiestas Concerts

Concert during Benidorm’s Patron Saint Festivities

Every year, the most popular bands put their grain of sand to the local fiestas of Benidorm. Artists and groups such as Fangoria, Revolver, Social Security and Melendi have passed through the Julio Iglesias Auditorium in Benidorm during the fiestas.

Last year, it was La casa Azul and Chimo Bayo that entertained us with their concerts on the 12 and 14 of November.

This year the stage where the most renowned artists will perform will be the plaza de SS.MM. Reyes de España. Where you dance and sing along with the most popular groups from the Spanish scene.

On Saturday, coinciding with the start of Benidorms Fiestas, you can enjoy La Gran Fiesta de los 40 Principales with national DJ Óscar Martínez and on Sunday you can enjoy and can dance to the rythem of Los Centellas.

On Monday do not miss the South American electro latino artist: Juan Magán; and on Wednesday in the aforementioned plaza we can return the the era of the 80s and 90s with the concert of the Dj’s “DREAM3TEAM RELOAD”

In addition, many of the peñas invite visitors to join in with them the many festivities celebrated over those days in Benidorm.

A fun time for all to enjoy, for residents and visitors alike. Fiestas Patronales de Benidorm 2018.

The Comedy Parade

Benidorm’s Festivities

The popular Humour Parade of Benidorm is one of the most characteristic events of the local festivities.

For several years now, it is celebrated on fiesta Tuesday, when they are very close to reaching the end of fiestas. The objective is to make you laugh to the rhythm of the most ironic parodies and satires, always making direct reference to the political and social news.

On this occasion, there will be six winning penyas (clubs), which will be selected after a meticulous decision by the members of the jury. The prizes will range between the 200€ (fifth and sixth prize) and 1200€ (first prize). As usual, some of these prizes will be borne by the Peñas Association of Benidorm(the first and sixth), and others will be sponsored by the Festival Commission (the rest of the prizes).

The Closing of the Benidorm Fiestas: the Multicolor Parade of Floats and the traditional Fireworks

Parade of floats in Benidorm

These are two of the most elegant and spectacular events of the Benidorm Festivities, which will be held on Wednesday the 15th: the parade of floats, where the participating clubs spend much of the year planning a float that always has the strongest objective, surprise for the jury and fighting to get one of the two most important awards. It is the first prize and the prize for the artisan float of Fiestas de Benidorm.

In this case, the participants usually make use of their greatest ingenuity to represent current affairs, in many cases paying tribute to the cinema and television.

The parade will begin at the park of Elche (Dove park) and will end in the plaza de la Hispanidad, passing through the Almendros Avenue, and the Venus, Ruzafa, Martínez Alejos and Gambo streets.

The finishing touch will be once again the queens and their court of the fiestas (major and children).

As for the Fireworks, they will once again be the final and definitive culmination to the 2018 Benidorm Festivities. For this, our prestigious Valencian Fireworks company will exhibit a dazzling and original session of fireworks that will once again illuminate the town in a new and very special way.
