Discover the best beaches of the Mediterranean

Can you imagine yourself on holiday on your ideal beach, lying on fine white sand, under a radiant sun, listening to the soft murmur of the waves and the sea breeze caressing your face…? Don’t just think about it, grab your swimsuit and come to enjoy the coast.

The best blue flag beaches are concentrated on the Mediterranean. Not in vain, Spain is one of the world’s countries with the best beaches. Choosing a beach is the hard part since it has 577 beaches and 101 marinas awarded in 2015 with the distinctive Blue Flag, guaranteeing quality and safety.

It’s an award that is managed by the European Foundation for Environmental Education and is awarded annually to beaches and marinas that meet a series of   requirements such as water quality, safety and services, environmental management and environmental information and education

What guarantees does this distinction offer?. On the subject of safety and services, the presence of qualified lifeguards, first aid equipment, designated areas for water skiing, surf, kite surf, boating etc., accident and emergency plans, safe and easy beach access, access point to drinking water and a beach map indicating the location of the different facilities and services. In terms of water quality, bathing waters should offer excellent levels of quality, control measures to avoid the spillage of contaminated substances or waste and comply with the regulations for urban waste water flows. In terms of information and environmental education, information regarding the area´s natural parks and protected species, information on the quality of bathing water, local laws and beach conduct must be clearly displayed for the public. And finally, environmental management determines that the beach must be clean, have adequate and clean toilets, an appropriate amount of waste bins and containers that are emptied regularly, comply with the environmental legislation, carry out regular environmental inspections of beach facilities and prohibit camping and the presence of domestic animals on the beach.
