Benidorm - View of Levante Beach

View of Levante Beach

History:

This town has Arabic origins and until the beginning of this century was a fishing village. Benidorm's grand transformation began in the 50's. Its population experienced a large development, the rhythm of the construction of buildings increased considerably and the affluence of visitors, which until then had been limited to the summer season, became permanent all year round.

The secret behind why Benidorm is a tourist town "by excellence" resides in its fine sandy beaches, the special microclimate that it has all year round, its modern buildings and broad streets, as well as its vast hotel industry and the endless leisure alternatives. All these features make Benidorm into a city, where you can enjoy yourself all day every day of the year, which enjoys an average 4 million visitors every season.

Gastronomy

Some of the most typical dishes in this area are:

  • Thick rice soup with red mullets and pumpkin.
  • Rice with beans and turnips.
  • "A banda" rice (rice with seafood and served with "alioli").
  • Alioli (garlic mayonnaise).
  • "Poor man's" style fish casserole.
  • Rice with anchovies and spinach.
  • "Pebrot" (typical dish made with peppers).
  • Stuffed squid.

Some speciality desserts that can be found are sweet potato pastries and "Saint Blas" buns that are made with eggs, almonds, flour, cinnamon, lemon and olive oil.

Another typical dish is "Coca", which is a delicious savoury flat pastry that can either be garnished with vegetables and fish, or with vegetables and different types of sausages.
