Mojácar - Typical house
Mojácar - View from the sea
History:
Unlike in any other place of Andalusia, Mojácar maintains an admirable faithfulness towards its Arabic past. Its exceptional mountain top position, which dominates across the Mediterranean's coastline, was sought by many ancient civilisations.
Tourism, far from destroying the authentic physiognomy of the town and its people, has ensured that visitors continue to admire the village's history, architecture, white coloured houses and welcoming people that inherited tolerance and coexistence with other cultures and religions from their ancestor's.
The village of Mojácar rests on a mountain at a 175 m. of altitude over sea level, in a small valley of the Cabrera mountain range. Its white houses and narrow and steep streets are a result of the influence that the Arabic World once had over this village.
The beaches of this municipality are situated by the foothills of these mountains and occupy a total of 17km of the Mediterranean coast, where you can find from secluded bays to vibrant beaches. The urbanised beach areas offer a wide variety of restaurants, accommodation, shops and leisure areas. at all times respecting the village's architecture such as the height, shape and colour of its constructions. Additionally, 12 Km of these beaches have been preserved of constructions and services and therefore are protected natural treasures, ideal for hiking all year round.

Gastronomy
Mediterranean cuisine gives great importance to the produce obtained from its sea, but it is also partial with the crop nurtured on its grounds. From the sea are obtained well known species such as crayfish, red prawns, large prawns, swordfish, mullets. with which an unsophisticated cuisine is made that, in spite of this, allows flavours to be enhanced. The use of grills, which the people of Almeria master, allows a greater appreciation of the quality and the flavour of the sea food prepared. For instance, a typical dish is grilled prawns only seasoned with salt, which does not include any type of fat or oil that may spoil its taste.
Even though sea food is an important element of the cuisine of this area, the crops from its orchards and their home-made elaborations, give entity and firmness to the cuisine of this population. Intense and exquisite dishes are elaborated that provide unique aromas. Dishes like wheat, garlic, dumplings, "Gurullos" with partridge or rabbit (stew with pasta), "Migas" (bread crumbs fried in olive oil and garlic mixed with peppers and ham or other ingredients) are typical in Mojácar and it surrounding areas.
On the other hand, conforming with is cosmopolitan dimension, Mojácar also offers an international cuisine: French, Chinese, Indian, Italian restaurants. and of course Spain's most famous dish: Paella.
